Choosing the Right Mattress
How can you
determine if your mattress needs replacing? The Better Sleep Council
(USA) provides this "ABC" checklist:
|
Age: |
Studies
show that a mattress and foundation provide optimum service for
about 8-10 years of nightly use. |
|
Beauty: |
Is your
mattress marred by soils, stains, tears or uneven surfaces and
sagging spots? Poor appearance generally indicates poor
performance. |
|
Comfort: |
Lie down
and concentrate on the feel of your mattress. If you find it
difficult to gauge its comfort level, visit a local bedding or
department store to see how a new, good-quality bed feels.
Advancements in bedding technology have made today's beds more
comfortable and supportive than new beds were a decade ago. |
SHOPPING
CHECKLIST
When shopping for
a new mattress, your goal is to find a sleep set that will offer you the
most comfort, support and value within your budget.
Use our Mattress
Shopping Checklist to make sure you choose a mattress that works for
you.
-
Comfort - The old thinking was that beds had to be hard to
be good for your back. The truth is that the modern foams and fibres
used in today's premium mattresses actually enhance the support of
the mattress, and are more comfortable as well. But the best way to
find out if a mattress is comfortable to you is to try it out in the
store.
-
Support - The best mattress for your back is one that
supports your spine at all points while allowing it to maintain its
natural alignment. The thickness of the coil wire in the innerspring
and the number of coils determine the surface coverage and support
the mattress will offer you.
-
Durability - Today's sleep sets are more durable than ever
before. But it's important to remember that mattresses today are
designed as a set. Together, a new mattress and foundation will
provide the best sleep set performance.
-
Size
- Considering that most people sleep better when a partner doesn't
crowd them, you should buy the largest size mattress that fits in
your bedroom and your budget.
-
Warranty - Always make sure that your new sleep set comes
with a warranty that protects you against manufacturer defects. All
Serta Perfect Sleeper, Perfect Night, BodyPillow and Kids products
are covered by a 10 year guarantee.
-
Ask
Questions - If you become confused about a mattress, ask a
retail sales consultant or
contact
Serta to find an answer.
-
Time
- You spend one third of your life in bed, so commit some time to
shopping for your new mattress. A little research about the features
and benefits available in your price range is an investment in the
quality of your sleep for years to come.
-
Pretend the mattress is in your bedroom - Don't just sit on
the bed. Lie down. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes you can easily
slip off. Lie down in your normal sleep position, close your eyes,
and shut out the world. Don't let the salesperson rush you, and
don't feel self-conscious. Relax, and give yourself a few minutes on
each bed before moving on. If you sleep with a partner make sure you
are both involved in the selection process.
-
Bigger
is better - Choose a bed about 6" or 15cm longer than you
are. If you sleep with a partner, don't settle for anything smaller
than queen-size. Sleepers turn between 40-60 times a night, and we
need room to move about freely so we don't awaken.
New Mattress Tips
You’ve Just Bought Your New Mattress Ensemble — Now What?
Top 10 Tips
Let’s say you’ve just bought your new mattress ensemble, and
you feel you’ve made the right choice. Congratulations! Now, on to the
next part of the process. Consider the following top 10 tips from your
friends at Serta:
|
1. |
Expect some
sort of adjustment period. After all those years on the
old bed, you may need some time to get used to the “feel” of the
new set — just as you might expect with new shoes. It may take
you a week or so — or, it could be as short as the time it takes
you to fall asleep the first night. |
|
2. |
Remember,
your comfort layers will probably “give” a little.
Today’s resilient mattress materials are designed to conform to
a sleeper’s individual contours. This can create normal body
impressions. You can reduce them by rotating (not flipping) your
mattress as needed — whether it’s one-sided or two-sided. |
|
3. |
Don’t
forget the matching foundation. Today’s mattresses use
a matching foundation built to provide proper support and
durability. Putting a new mattress on an old foundation has two
drawbacks:
(1) the “feel” you bought in the store won’t be there when you
get home, and
(2) your new mattress will probably sag or wear sooner.
Therefore, your bed won’t perform as well, and your warranty may
be invalid. |
|
4. |
Flex, yes.
But that’s about it. You can flex a mattress a little to go
through doorways, but it can never be folded, curled or sharply
bent. Such actions can damage the innerspring, cause comfort
layers to shift and create an uneven sleeping surface. |
|
5. |
Carry your
mattress upright. It’s easier to handle and less likely
to damage the mattress. |
|
6. |
Let your
mattress breathe. A new mattress has been wrapped in
plastic and needs a little time to air out before you put the
sheets on. Take the plastic wrapping off the mattress and lean
your new bed up against the wall to air it all the way around. |
|
7. |
Handles.
If your new mattress ensemble has handles, never use them to
support the full weight of the mattress. Handles are designed to
help position the mattress on the base. |
|
8. |
Protect
your new possession. You will use your mattress
ensemble more than any other furniture in your home, so protect
it. You may even want to vacuum it once a year. Keep your bed
clean and dry, and always use a mattress protector. It’s best
not to stand or jump on your mattress — the point is to sleep on
it. Treat spills and stains as soon as possible. Gently scrape
away any soil or absorb any liquid from the surface of the
fabric. Use luke warm soapy water as a general cleaning agent.
Test on concealed area for effect before proceeding. To remove
the residue of the spill, apply an appropriate cleaning agent,
strictly following the instructions. Don’t saturate the fabric
or interior with water or other cleaning liquids. Don’t use
dishwashing or laundry detergents or scrub with a brush. Dry
thoroughly in shade, away from direct heat. |
|
9. |
Size up the
sheets. If you have selected a thicker mattress, check
out your sheets. Will they fit the new bed? If not, you may need
deep-pocket sheets, which have been designed for extra thick and
pillow top beds. |
|
10. |
Tighten the
legs and castors. After 4-6 weeks the whole system has
settled. The legs and castors on your new sleep system may need
to be tightened to adjust to the settling. You should check and
tighten the legs and castors every 6 months |
There is an 11th tip, too,
that we’ve saved for last. (It would have saved the Serta Counting Sheep
a lot of aggravation, had they paid attention to it)
|
11. |
Keep that
law tag on at the end of the mattress! If you tear it
off, you won’t land in jail. But the tag has important
manufacturing information about your mattress, and it reinforces
your warranty rights. |
HOW TO
TURN YOUR MATTRESS
Instructions for both
Single & Double sided mattresses:
Single Sided:
These mattresses are designed to be used on one side only. They must be
rotated from end to end only. Rotate every 2 weeks for the first 4
months then 3 monthly thereafter. (Refer to picture 1)
Double Sided:
A double sided mattress should be rotated from end to end every time.
Alternate times the
mattress should be both rotated and turned over as per instructions
below. This will even out the wear. Perform this process every 2 weeks
for the first 4 months then 3 monthly thereafter. Avoid possible injury!
Do not try to turn & rotate an awkward mattress on your own!
